The representative consumer in the neoclassical growth model with idiosyncratic shocks ✩

چکیده
This paper studies a complete-market version of the neoclassical growth model, where agents face idiosyncratic shocks to earnings. We show that if agents possess identical preferences of either the CRRA or the addilog type, then the heterogeneous-agent economy behaves as if there was a representative consumer who faces three kinds of shocks, to preferences, to technology and to labor. We calibrate and simulate the constructed representative-consumer models. We find that idiosyncratic uncertainty can have a non-negligible effect on aggregate labor-market fluctuations. 2003 Elsevier Science (USA). All rights reserved. JEL classification: C73; D90; E21

Quasi-linear preferences in the macroeconomy: Indeterminacy, heterogeneity and the representative consumer
Weuse aggregation theory to investigate the link between one-consumer andmulti-consumer economies under a quasi-linear class of preferences. Our study is carried out in the context of the neoclassical growthmodel. The quasi-linear preferences considered are additive in consumption and leisure and linear in leisure. We first show that in a homogeneous agents economy, the individual hours worked ...
متن کاملEffect of Sentiments on Macroeconomic Variables in Iran: A Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Approach
This study aims to evaluate the effect of sentiments on Iran's economy through a New Keynesian Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium model in a closed economy. In this study, the coefficients of the proposed model are calibrated and estimated using the quarterly data of Iran's economy from 2004 to 2015. It shows that in the presence of sentiment, how stochastic impulses affect the main macroec...
متن کاملA three state model of worker flows in general equilibrium
We develop a simple model featuring search frictions and a nondegenerate labor supply decision along the extensive margin. The model is a standard version of the neoclassical growth model with indivisible labor and idiosyncratic productivity shocks and frictions characterized by employment loss and employment opportunity arrival shocks. We argue that it is able to account for the key features o...
متن کاملThe Neoclassical Growth Model with Heterogeneous Quasi-Geometric Consumers
This paper investigates how the assumption of quasi-geometric (hyperbolic) discounting affects the distributional implications of the standard one-sector neoclassical growth model with infinitely lived heterogeneous agents. The agents are subject to idiosyncratic shocks and face borrowing constraints. We confine attention to an interior Markov recursive equilibrium. The consequence of quasi-geo...
متن کاملMacroeconomic Shocks and Malaysian Tourism Industry: Evidence from a Structural VAR Model
Abstract his study employs a structural vector autoregression (SVAR) model to investigate the macroeconomic shocks on Malaysian tourism industry, especially how the economy dynamically responds to oil price shocks, exchange rates, changes in price level, exports, economic growth and tourism income during the study time period from January 2001 to December 2012. The results indicate that oil...
